The impetus for this project came in January 2024 when my wife and I were invited to vist the House .  I was impressed by the facility and how committed the staff were ito supporting the families staying there.  I wanted to find a way to support the house, and suggested that I might be able to add some color to the windows that line the north-facing entry hall.   At that point it was just a concept, but soon became a major undertaking.  Initially, my designs grew out of some of Frank Loyd Wright's work, but as the project progressed I was encouraged to become more fluid and playful, always incorporating a pathway for the heart.   Each window has a theme that, in sequence, tell a story of challenges, discovery and hope. 

 

 

WINDOW CONSTRUCTION

The windows are constructed using traditional lead and reinforced zinc came (channels).  Since the windows face north, I used a background of clear baroque glass, choosing pieces that complemented the flow of the elements.  Primary colors of bright Spectrum cathedral glass were used, accented with clear dichroic and other textured glasses.  I also incorporated fused, etched and painted glass to add detail in the flowers, pinwheels, and butterflies.  It took approximately a month to complete each window, and then an additional two months to glaze and finish the pieces.   A particular thanks to Charlie who worked with me in the Reston Community Center's wood shop individually framing each window (to within an eigthth of an inch!).  Finally, every frame was painted before being installed in the transom of the existing double-hung windows.
